To bonk or to bonng

Crock and Archie:

I like that the idea that a million people would tune in to watch Archie get bonked in the head with a basketball made an appearance in this Archie, showing that the writer either:
  1. assumes his/her loyal audience is a lot bigger than it actually is,
  2. has heard that stupid things are popular on YouTube, but hasn't ever visited the site to see that these sorts of stupid things get far fewer than a million hits, or
  3. forgot to give any number of background details that would support that number, like that Oprah was the person throwing the basketball or that the Dilton's already built up viewers at a channel devoted just to basketball-head-bonking.
Whatever the case, Dilton's shown amazing cunning in trying to drive Archie crazy... for no reason other than to toy with Archie's brain the way a cat toys with a mouse before destroying it.

Grossie, on the other hand, can't be shaken. I'd love hair spray too if it let me take a cannonball to the head.

Snuffy Smith:

Ha! It's funny because Snuffy's gone color-blind and doesn't know it yet. Next week, we'll see Dagwood Bumstead lose a leg and then tell us about how he's going skiing!

Marmaduke:

"Now let's get a shovel and fill in that hole, and we'll never have to suffer at the hands of that demon-dog again."

Tuesday's Crock

It's a Zen koan here. I'm thinking that the creators of Crock put together a comic that defies all explanation. Any joke in this comic will somehow contradict an element of the artwork or the words. It's a joke perfect in its meaninglessness.

Thursday's Crock

Well, yes. Apparently they are.

Wednesday's Crock

I really don't like Crock, because usually it's completely nonsensical, but today's was funny made me smile made sense had a quality that was identifiable as a joke. I think that they're going with a new format, less observational comedy and more gross-out.

Tuesday's Crock

Oh, my.... She won a "facial". And it'll make the boys look at her. There's a joke here somewhere....

Thursday's Crock

This might also be a reference to this and all the other blogs out there that make fun of Crock on a regular basis because it never makes any sense, and, when it does, it's usually an old, tired, lame joke. If you don't like Crock, then you didn't put on your good humor pants today.

Last Tuesday's Crock

Uh oh, looks like someone bought Crock writers Rechin and Wilder a book of 1001 "Yo' Mama" jokes. They'll be set on days they can't think of jokes for years.

Crock

I think that I might need to stop reading Crock. This is just too much. Here we see Otis again, who got all dressed up for January in Duluth in order to go for a nice stroll during the daytime in the Sahara Desert. And he has a friend who shares his debilitating coldness.

But the real boner is... well... the entire premise. What in the world are those camels doing moving stuff without humans forcing them? And why is Otis's friend sorry for them? And how is that a joke?

Why, why, why do I still read Crock?

Crock

Haha, kids and their technology! It makes them anti-social, don't you know. And sometimes older people can't understand it! Whoo-hoo!

Uhhh, yeah. I realize that the comics love to show how in touch they are with the average 65-year-old by making fun of technology, but the lengths that this Crock went to are, well, quite amazing. First, who's this kid? I've been reading Crock for a while now and I don't remember any Otis. But not only is he in the middle of a north African desert in a sweatshirt, he's also walking to school right through a war zone. While I guess we're supposed to see him as a techno-addict, all he has on are headphones, which have been around since before I was born, making this Crock less than timely. Maggot there is digging a hole for no apparent reason. (A trench? Could it be a trench right next to the path to school?) But what really takes the cake is Grossie's comment, which actually makes me miss sanity. Either Crock creators Rechin and Wilder stopped following new gadgets after the invention of the talkie, or they're complete kooks.

But, I suppose it's OK and all this madness and narrative disruption took place to set up a really funny joke....

Crock

This Crock raises even more questions:
  1. How did the Chocoholics Anonymous Guy find Grossie in the middle of a vast desert?
  2. Why does CHG need a clipboard to carry a very simple message to Grossie?
  3. Wouldn't the purpose of an organization like CA be to help people when they fall off the wagon, not kick them out?
  4. Why is CHG wearing a fedora hat on top of his mullet in the desert in Northern Africa?
  5. Why do CHG's eyelids in panel two look like breasts?
  6. If a wagon were made of chocolate, wouldn't it break or melt if someone sat on it?
  7. Is there such a thing as Crock-aholics Anonymous for people who can't stop reading it but really want to?

Crock

This Crock raises a few interesting questions:
  1. Why is Grossie marching in the middle of a vast desert?
  2. Why are signs illegal?
  3. Why's that guy missing an arm in panel two?
  4. Where did that whip go that was in panel one? Did the guy drop it with his arm?
  5. How can we see Grossie's mouth through her burka?
  6. How did that sign get invisible chocolate on it?
  7. Why is Grossie looking at me in panel three?
  8. Why, why, why do I still read Crock?
