Get Fuzzy

I don't think I've ever put up a Get Fuzzy here. Maybe because it's actually funny....

This is an actual queer reference, however miniscule. We exist, dammit!

But this does remind me that I wanted to share this all with you, the story of the "Lawrence comes out" storyline, as told by Lynn Johnston. I just found it the other day, and I have to say, it gives me a little more respect for the Johnston. While her writing has gotten worse, I think that her art has improved a lot over the last 15 years. I wonder if people would have the same reaction to a gay character in a mainstream comic nowadays. Is this progress?

I'm all about For Better or For Worse, and I visit a blog about it. A lot of the bitter posters sorta mock the whole storyline ("It wasn't THAT ballsy of her to do it. . . she just did it for the awards" sort of stuff), but I think it was pretty amazing. It was well-done, and realistic--it wasn't all hugs and "We love you." Lawrence's parents were upset, and his best friend was upset, too. It was true to his character, and as someone growing up in a very conservative area, seeing this series in the paper was very meaningful to me

I have to say that I've given For Better or For Worse a lot of slack due to the Lawrence storyline. While I can't really bear to read the strip now, I have to give Johnston credit for that storyline. I actually bought the collection it was in.
